Why all of a sudden, many successful company leaders have started inviting their companies and colleagues to make more mistakes and embrace them more?
Immediately after he was appointed as CEO of Coca-Cola company in May, James Quincey asked all company senior executives to go beyond the fear of making mistakes that surround the company culture after the “New Coke” fiasco that passed by the company years ago. He said the following about the subject:
“If we’re not making mistakes, we’re not doing enough.”
In June, Net Haslix CEO Reed Hastings tried to clarify concerns about broadcast services covering a large number of high-rated programs and canceling too few programs, although the company is experiencing unmatched success thanks to the number of member users. He even stated at a technology conference:
“We have to take more risks, try crazy things. Even now, we should have had a larger program cancellation rate in total. ”
Even Jeff Bezos, the Amazon CEO and also one of the undisputed most successful entrepreneurs in the world, expresses the fact that company growth and innovative face can be achieved through mistakes made. After Amazon bought Whole Foods, he made the following words:
“If you’re under a really strong claim, it must be an experimental attempt. The fact that something is experimental means that it is not known exactly whether this thing will work in the future. Experiments tend to fail by nature. However, a few great achievements in them can outshine hundreds of unsuccessful results that do not benefit. ”
Although what lies behind these CEOs is understandable, it may not be as easy for many of us to apply it to practical life. Today, there are countless company leaders and numerous institutions that support innovative and creative visions. But most of them still fear to make mistakes, take the wrong step and be disappointed. It is precisely for this reason that, although they support it in theory, we witness that many companies are not able to produce outstanding innovative and creative jobs in the sectors. However, there is an important point here; If you are not ready to make mistakes, you cannot be ready to learn. Similarly, companies and individuals who do not continue to learn by keeping up with the speed of change in the world will never show the targeted development.
So what’s the right way to make mistakes? Are there specific methods that individuals and companies can use to establish the necessary link between small mistakes and big successes? Smith College, which is composed of all students in Massachusetts, has launched a training program called “Failing Successfully”. As part of the program, students are taught what we all need to learn. Rachel Simmons, who led the program, says the following in an article published in the New York Times:
“What we are trying to teach here is that making mistakes is not a problem of the learning process but an important structural part of it.”
In fact, when students enroll in this program, they also earn a Certificate of Failure, thanks to this certificate, individuals are empowered to “make mistakes and screw up the situation” in their relationships, projects, exams, or other matters that are of great importance to them, but still doing so It is also stated that they will continue to be an excellent and extremely individual. In this way, students who have learned to deal with errors to a certain degree become less fragile and more daring than those who dream of an excellent and uninterrupted performance.
This is also a viewpoint applicable to the business world. Patrick Doyle, who has been the CEO of Domino’s Pizza company since 2010, has performed one of the most successful performances that any company leader can show in any field. Despite this, he has a great belief that all the company’s victories are due to the possibility of making mistakes and taking the wrong steps. Similarly, in a presentation to other company leaders, Doyle stated that there are two major challenges for companies and individuals who are more honest about mistakes. The first is, according to him, the situation which he also calls “the error of neglect.” This situation can be expressed by the fact that many people who have a new idea prefer not to pursue their idea because they are afraid that when they try to bring this idea to life, they will face failure and therefore harm their career. The second challenge is yet another situation that he calls “reluctance to lose” on his behalf. In other words, it is the tendency of people to experience the events they face in order not to lose rather than win. Because for many of us, “the effect of losing the pain on us is two times more than the effect of winning.”
According to Doyle, “Creating a space for people to make mistakes is very motivating for these people and one of the conditions of success.” This is why this can be a good reference point for all of us. Remember, as Reed Hastings, Jeff Bezos or the new CEO of Coca-Cola participated, there is no way to learn without making mistakes, such as not being able to achieve success without a decline.
